You should try making it a CSS background image so that you're only making one call to the server when you load the interface. That might help a little. I guess it would help even more if you also hosted the image somewhere else... Flickr? Picasa? FFFFound? Photobucket?

Seriously, it looses about 50% of its hilarity without the UI.
