When I run into situations like the ones I'll explain in a bit, I wonder what in the world I did to deserve this... First story starts out with a phone call from a woman in accounting. She tells me that she can't get her printer to work and she really needs to print out this month's budget and hand it in to the boss in 10 minutes. I run through the main items that I would "think" is within the possibilities of your average user.... Me: Is it powered on? DOH!!! Just to be thorough, I keep her on the line to make sure that's her only problem Her: Ok, the paper is in and it still won't print. I get to her office and double check everything for myself.. That's right, you read it correctly. She apparently opened the printer drawer and put an entire ream of paper in it....without removing the wrapping!!! What did I do to deserve this?!?! I only have time to post this stupid story, but don't fret...there are many more to come.

So I recently took over this job from some wannabe who didn't know his ass from RJ45 jack. After cleaning up a lot of crap that was just really not necessary I found a note that said it was costing him two tapes with high compression per day for 5 servers. If this had been a larger company I could have believed it. I have 32 users on-site and about another 50 remotely. So I decided to look into what he was backing up. I opened Veritas and looked at the shares. The dumb ass was backing up drivers, service packs and even the operating system. No wonder all of his backups were failing and costing him so much. I had found notes that he was searching for a fix so he could backup NT (yes I have 3 NT4 servers). I could have understood if he was just backing up the profiles from the winnt directory, but he was backing up the entire OS and couldn't figure out why his backups were failing. To top it off, the documents and spreadsheets and SQL were being ignored. The important crap that should be backed up. I keep remembering what one of my instructors told me in my first Linux class, "90% of the practising doctors out there graduated at the bottom of their class." I guess this also goes for admins.

It's hilarious what some of these 'executives' do to earn their paychecks. Two years ago we had a massive restructure designed to save 'costs' and 'move forward and improve swervices', my group were already running lean and mean and were loved by the staff we were supporting, but other geniuses had better ideas, and didn't want to leant about how we did things...

No big story, this is just my home network, situated next to my Linux box. Pretty spiffy, eh? Hey, at least my wires are labeled. When I worked at Sierra their network room with the gathering place servers etc. actually looked a lot like this. You had to step over PCs on the floor and masses of wires to walk through it.

I work for a real estate company that does construction, property management of commercial and multifamily properties and property development. I have been here for two years. My first year here, I was the desktop administrator. There was only one other person in IT at that time, which was the IT Director. It was widely known that this person was unliked throughout the company. Not because he was mean but because he was a bit of a douchebag. He had control of the entire network and would not let anyone work on it except him.
